"Woe to those smitten with cookies, whilst ceramic beauty ensconces them, unseen."
~ Cookie Proverb
Second fiddles everywhere understand the plight of the cookie jar: the stunt man, the bass player, Messina, Garfunkel. We here at OnlyCookieJars.com lament the apparent dearth of appreciation accorded the cookie jar. After all, does your cookie experience not benefit greatly from withdrawing a sweet, buttery disk from an opaque vessel, slowly and carefully replacing the lid, perhaps so no one can hear? We think so. And lo, should you not be privy to the contents that await you? Peanut butter? Ginger Snaps? Jubilee Wafers? Almond Meringue? Macaroons? Oh my.

Based on reliable research on collectibles and antiques, cookie jars sit just behind china. Conventional wisdom suggests that cookies are popular in their own right, but with such a large number of people collecting cookie jars, is it any wonder cookie sales are up? While flour, sugar, coffee, and other dry goods can be stored in similar receptacles, the dissappointment experienced when removing a lid and finding something other than cookies should speak for itself.
Famous cookie jar collectors
Given the quaint nature of cookie jar collecting, and the tendency for practitioners to be relatively low-profile people, it is interesting to know there are a few famous individuals with cookie jar collections. Few know that none other than Star Wars sex symbol Billy Dee Williams is an avid collector. Seen widely in his role as Lando Calrissian in Star Wars, Billy Dee conjures images of space cowboydom, fierce loyalty, and redemption. But that doesn't mean he doesn't have a softer side. About 16 years ago, he bought his first, a ceramic opera singer for which he paid $125.
Even more famous, though less alive, is Andy Warhol. He accrued 175 ceramic cookie jars in his lifetime. Laconic, iconic, and always enigmatic, when asked why cookie jars, he responded, "They are time pieces." Indeed, the cookie jar should be credited with chronicling American advertising, lore, traditions, and cotidian life. At an auction of Warhol's goods, his collection fetched $250,000.
